Power BI and Tableau

Power BI is really a powerful tool. Too bad it only runs on Windows. But, as I described in a previous post, you can install windows on a cloud instance and then install Power BI. It is quite straightforward, you should play around with the instance model, so you get the best performance for your use. Also, you can link a local folder on your computer to the instance, which makes it easier to copy files to the cloud compute instance.

My experience by accessing the shared folder was simply too slow, so I opted for copying my data to the remote computer and working on them there, using Power BI.

Now, Tableau is quite similar to Power BI. Although I experienced a lot of customization options on Power BI, I found Tableau to be quite smooth to work with, given the compatibility and performance of working with data.

At the end of the day, the choice of reporting tool is up to the companies choosing the software, but if you should further build your skills with these tools, I suggest getting a general knowledge and experience with both and then diving into the specific tool, where your next job might have the demand.

I do expect to share more experiences during this Data Science journey.

Getting a job in Data Science

— Well these tips will apply to any job application process

Besides experimenting with the reporting tools, I also had a go on the “Career in Data Science”. The instructor, Ken Jee, gave a very insightful guide to the job application process.

I will here describe some of the tips and add some of my own in between.

Setting up your LinkedIn profile

Your LinkedIn profile is your professional window to the world. You should use the summary section to describe your latest achievement and interests, so the reader gets an idea about your current journey and your personal goals.

The job section can hold all your jobs if you like, and should just describe the most essential achievements. In some cases, it is a good idea to add some KPIs if any.

Then you have the education and skills sections, where your educational achievements are listed and your skills are shared. Note that you can request colleagues or people you worked with in any capacity, to write a recommendation on your profile and also rate your skills.

LinkedIn is a great tool for networking, and you should make an effort to use it to connect with colleagues and contacts whenever you engage in meetings or events.

You can exchange contacts with a QR code. Yes …. it can be difficult to find, but once you know it….

on the LinkedIn mobile app, click the “My Network”, from here you can connect with another LinkedIn user.

Writing posts and sharing articles with your network, helps you to connect. Note that you should share some general information 80% of the time and share more targetted posts or articles 20% of the time to engage with the audience in your network, who might be more interested in your business segment.

Researching the company

When you apply for a job, you should do your best to research the company properly.

Writing a resume

You should write your resume to target the specific job. This means you should highlight the activities from each role you had, with relevance to the role you are applying for.

If you had more than 10 years of experience, it is ok to have a resume with two pages but try to keep it to one page. — I only share the past 10 years on my resume, but leave the full list of experiences on LinkedIn. You should be aware, that any hiring manager will google your name.

you can use resume tools like ResumeWorded, to adjust your resume and your LinkedIn profile.

Remember that KPIs on your resume will bring attention to business-oriented hiring managers. If you have some achievements that show measurable improvements or impact on projects, you should try to add them.

If you are in graphic design, programming, or Data Science, it will be a good idea to develop a portfolio.

Github

There are other git repository providers, but a very large number of developers and open-source platforms make use of Github. — Some of the other providers are Gitlab and bitbucket.

Use Github to create your portfolio. for example Github pages or just your profile Readme file. You can refer to specific projects and showcase your skills and experiences.

Webpage

It is easy to set up totally free web pages. Static websites based on various content generators like Hugo or Gatsby can be used to showcase your portfolio. Moreover, you can develop features that may have an interest in the jobs you are applying for.

Kaggle and more

Kaggle is a very interesting tool to develop experience in Data Science. There are many other websites and platforms out there, that can help you improve your skills.

Good luck in your job search!
